Robert Henry Turney was killed in action on 15 November 1942, when the escort aircraft carrier H.M.S. Avenger was torpedoed and sunk by U 155 off Gibralter with a loss of 67 officers and 438 ratings, the biggest single loss sustained by the Royal Navy during the course of the North African landings; the above described forwarding box is addressed to his mother, ‘Mrs. M. A. Turney, 18 West End Road, Bitterne, Southampton.’
