Cecil James Cooke died on active service while borne on the books of the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Formidable on 18 March 1944, on which date she was undergoing a refit at Belfast. Formidable had earlier won Battle Honours for Matapan 1941, Crete 1941, Mediterranean 1941, North Africa 1942-43, Sicily 1943 and Salerno 1943, while the cruiser Enterprise was similarly honoured for Norway 1940, Biscay 1943 and Normandy 1944. Cooke is buried in Otterbourne (St. Matthew) Churchyard, Hampshire.
