The armed merchant cruiser H.M.S. Canton served on the Northern Patrol and in the Western Approaches (1939-40), with the Freetown Escort Force (1940-41), on the South Atlantic Station (1941-42), and with the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean (1942-44), in which latter year she was converted for use as a troopship.
