Major John Frederick Houston practised medicine in Hamilton for more than half a century. He lived on James Street South. He was born in Carelton Place on 21 Nov 1921 and was educated there. He became a teacher and taught in Western Canada to finance his medical studies at Queen's University. At the outbreak of WW1, he went overseas as a private but was returned to complete his final year at Queens becuase of the shortage of military doctors. He returned to active overseas service in 1917 with the Royal Army Medical Corps. After the war he took post graduate studies in New York and in the early 1920s opened an office in hamilton on James Street North. Several years later he moved to the Victorian home on James Street South where he lived until his death. Dr Houston returned to military duty with the outbreak of the Second World War. Promoted to the rank of Major he was in charge of the permanent medical board in Hamilton until his return to private practise in 1943. He was the past president of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine, a former chairman of the General Hospital's medical board, and a past president of the Hamilton Associationof Occupational Therapy. He died on 21 August 1974 in Hamilton Ontario.

Included with the medal is considerable research and a BW phot of Major Houston in a CAMC uniform.
