Pte Donald Francis Smyth was born on 18 July 1894 in Montreal, Quebec. He enlisted on 27 October 1917 in Montreal in the 171st Battalion. The regiment was disbanded in Canada and he was transferred to the 1st Depot Battalion 1st Quebec Regiment. He embarked in Halifax on the SS Melita on 17 April 1918 and arrived in England on 28 April. He transferred to the Canadian Reserve Cyclist Battalion on 12 July 1918 followed by a transfer to the 23rd Canadian Reserve Battalion. He embarked in Liverpool on the Celtic on 10 March 1919 and arrived in Halifax on 18 March. He was demobilised on 20 March 1919.
