British War and Victory Medal (impressed 523310 L. Cpl H.J. Pate C.A.M.C.)

L.Cpl Hugh John Pate was born December 15 1880 in Cambridge England. He was a salesman at the time of enlistment.  He enlisted on 12 July 1916 in Scarcee Camp, Calgary with the 1st Field Ambulance Depot. He embarked on SS Olympic for England from Halifax on 21 December 1916. He arrived in England on 26 December 1916. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 July 1917 and received a good conduct badge on 18 July. On 15 October 1917 he transfers to the Canadian Special Hospital in Buxton. On 4 February 1918 he reverts to the rank of private. He transfers overseas on 10 September 1918 and is attached to the 1 Canadian General Hospital. He is struck off strength of the 16 Canadian General Hospital on 2 July 1919. On 13 August 1919 he sails from England and arrived in Canada on 21 August 1919. He is discharged on that day.. He died in a vehicle accident on 30 January 1966. An Obituary in the Time Colonist on 2 Februar 1966 indicates that he was a Reverand Father and former Pastor of St. George's Liberal Catholic Church. At the time of his death he is listed as 91 years old. That would mean that he was born in 1875 and likely lied about his age to enter military service at the age of 40.

Pair is sold with CEF service record and copy of death certificate.
