Accidentally Wounded in the Foot

British War and Victory Medal (impressed 818270 A Cpl W. D. McMillian 26-CAN INF.)

A Cpl William David McMillian was born 14 March 1886 in Glace Bay Cape Breton. He was a cook by trade and had previously seved in the 104th BN CEF.  He attested for service on 15 August 1916 and went overseas with the 140th BN.  He proceeded oversea with the 26th BN CEF and was taken on strength in France on 12 May 1917.  He was accidentally wounded in the right foot while in the trenches on 15 October 1918. The matter was referred for investigation but determined to be an accident. He embarked Liverpool on SS Lapland and arrived in Halifax on 10 April 1919. After the war he worked in the Caledonia Mines in Cape Breton. His record indicates that he served in Great Britain, France, Belgium and Germany. He died on 4 October 1931.

Statements in the McMillan's CEF service file indicate that a private had been cleaning his weapon while standing in the trenches. He pointed the weapon toward the ground at the same time that Cpl McMillan had passed and the rifle discharged hitting McMillan through the foot. McMillan who was used as a stretcher bearer dressed his own wound before the doctor arrived.

The group is court mounted for display.
